How to Create a Good Lab Report

The laboratory report is a description of the experiment. The format used in professional journal articles is taken as the basis here. The thesis is the main hypothesis that your experimental study has to consider. Read on and learn the structure of the laboratory report.

Title Page

The front page of a laboratory research report contains important information about your study (for example, the topic of your work, your name and the name of the college).

Annotation

A sheet with the annotation always follows the title page in such a work. It is a brief overview of your work, which is, as a rule, no more than a paragraph. Experts believe that the size of the abstract should not exceed 250 words, although the specific requirements may differ depending on the opinion of your academic adviser or the requirements for the format of the article in an academic journal.

Introduction

Your work should begin with an introduction, which sets out previous research on this topic, explains the objectives of the current study and discloses your hypothesis (thesis statement). As a rule, there are several pages in this section, and writing it requires considerable effort when searching for information in order to create a fairly complete overview of previous research. Do not forget about quotes and be sure to include references to sources.

Tell the Audience about Your Topic

Your first task is to give a brief description of the question to be considered during the study. What are you trying to demonstrate in the experiment or research? What phenomenon are you studying? Give a brief history of the study of the chosen topic and explain how it relates to the current study. You can tell about your previous research if it is relevant to the current topic.

Explore Your Theme

When you find an interesting article, look at the sources for it to find other research works on this topic. When making notes about these articles, do not forget to write down where you found this information. Mention the name of the author, the journal and the date of publication. It will help you avoid accusations of plagiarism.

Formulate Your Hypothesis

Highlight the areas, which previous research works skipped or which can be potentially erroneous. What is missing in previous studies on your topic? What questions still have to be answered? Your own hypothesis should cover all these issues.

The Body of the Text

Describe how you conducted the experiment in the next section of your report. As usual, this part includes several subsections:

• Describe the participants of the experiment (who they are, how they were selected to participate in the study). For example, “100 primary school pupils were randomly selected for this test…”
• Define the materials, measures, equipment, or visual aids used in the experiment. For example, “Two stories were used to assess children’s understanding of second-order concepts…”
• Describe the model used in the experiment. Specify the variables, as well as possible variations of these variables. Tell the readers how the experiment went. For example, “The experiment was conducted for several groups. The age and understanding of second-order were independent variables concepts…”
• The next part of your section should explain all the procedures of which the experiment consisted. Tell what you asked the participants about, how you collected the data, and show the sequence of the experiment stages.

Research Results

In this part of your work, the data collected during your experiment should be presented. This section does not include the interpretation of the results, so it is usually short. Use tables and figures to display statistics and results.

Discussion

Your report should include a section in which you can discuss and interpret the results of the experiment. Did the results of your experiment confirm or disprove the hypothesis? In addition, you should offer possible explanations of the experimental results and tell what these results may mean in terms of future research on this topic.

Bibliograohy
